Imagine that you’re laying the foundation for a house in which you’re going to live for a long time. A solid foundation embedded in firm soil will provide the stability you need to create a home filled with joy for years to come.

The root chakra is comprised of whatever grounds you to stability in your life. This includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs such as letting go of fear. When these needs are met, you feel grounded and safe, and you tend to worry less day to day.

Whether or not you feel secure now often has less to do with what you have at your disposal and more to do with how safe you felt as a small child. When you consider psychologist Erik Erickson’s stages of development, the first stage—trust versus mistrust—is closely related to your root chakra development. As infants, if your caregivers readily gave you what you needed to survive with consistency, you felt secure in the world. You felt that the world was a place that could be trusted to provide your basic needs. Yet, if your caregivers withheld or delayed in giving you what you needed, or if that giving was inconsistent, you may find yourself with first chakra blockages.

First Chakra at a glance:

Sanskrit name: Muladhara - root support Element: Earth Color: Red Shape: Square Petals of the lotus: Four Seed sound: LANG Vowel sound: O Rights: To have Endocrine gland: Adrenal cortex Physical association:The skeletal structure, teeth, large intestine, kidneys, blood Psychological function: Survival and self preservation Identity: Physical identity Developmental stage: Womb to 12 months Challenge: Fear Plane: Physical plane Planets: Saturn, Earth Deity: Brahma, Dakini, Ganesha Mythological Animal White elephant with seven trunks Sense organ: Nose Predominant sense: Smell Incense: Cedar Herb: Sage Sephira: Malkuth Tarot suite: Pentacles

Root Chakra Affirmations

I feel deeply rooted. I am connected to my body. I feel safe and secure. Just like a tree or a star, I have a right to be here. I stand for my values, for truth, and for justice. I have what I need. I am grounded, stable, and standing on my own two feet. I nurture my body with healthy food, clean water, exercise, relaxation, and connection with nature. I am open to possibilities. I am grateful for all the challenges that helped me to grow and transform. I trust in the goodness of life. I make choice that are healthy and good for me. I trust myself. I love life.

How to Know If Your Root Chakra Is Out of Balance

Physical symptoms

On the physical level, the root chakra is associated with adrenal glands, the skeletal structure, teeth, large intestine, kidneys, and the blood. An out of balance root chakra can also manifest physically symptoms like:

Loss or gain in weight Sex drive being over or underactive Poor immune system Anemia Laziness Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Emotional symptoms

Volatile emotions Selfishness and Obsession Anger or rage Fearfulness Frustration,

Psychological symptoms

Restlessness and anxiety No interest in the real world or surviving practically Anxiety Lack of focus or motivation Depression Pessimism or negative thinking about life Long-term feelings of vulnerability Paranoia Aggression Quick-tempered Insecurity Inability to relax

On the spiritual level, root chakra issues may show up as stubbornness and not willing to expand one's view point. Often, If you’ve always struggled to achieve your goals, or even lacked the confidence to set them, healing your root chakra can make a big change in your life.

The root chakra is a major piece of the foundation for your overall health. When it’s in balance with no blockages you’re more likely to feel incredibly healthy, stable, relaxed, trusting, secure, and prosperous. You have an abundance of energy as well as abundance thinking in all areas of life. Feelings of centeredness, calmness, and preparation are all characteristic of a balanced root chakra. People tend to describe you as having a lot of common sense and you’ll feel easy with yourself – mentally and physically

Healing your root chakra

Color Therapy

The color associated with the root chakra is red. To balance the chakra, envisioning the color red glowing brightly at the base of the spine, where this chakra is located, is the beginning of root chakra cleansing and balancing. Start with the simple meditation of imaging a bright red light at the base of your tailbone. Picture this red light extending down your legs and feet, grounding you to the earth.

Another way is to focus on the root chakra when red colored candles are lit. Red color brings balance and energy to the root chakra. Other things which can be tried are wearing red clothes, eating red colored foods and even painting the toe nails red. By means of meditation the red energy can be brought down in the root chakra area.

Food Therapy

Including foods like strawberries, red cabbage and red apples can be beneficial. Earthy foods like carrots, beets, ginger or foods which have roots should be eaten, as they energize the root chakra. High protein foods like eggs, meat, nuts and beans are also good.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils embody the frequencies and healing properties of plants. Not only they deliver certain properties to the physical body, they also work on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

Essential oils like Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Myrrh, Cedarwood, Galbanum, Angelica, Frankincense, Benzoin, St.John’s Wort and other root oils can be used for healing the Root Chakra.

Mudra Practice

Mudras are hand positions used in meditations which help in opening the chakras. Specific mudras can send more energy to specific chakras. To increase the effect, sounds from Sanskrit letters, are chanted along with the mudra practice. The following steps can be followed:

Touch the tip of the thumb and the index finger. Focus on the Root Chakra or the spot between the anus and the genitals. Chant the Sanskrit word which sounds like LAM.

Being Close to Nature

The element of the root chakra is the earth. Being close to nature, the sound and smell of nature has a positive effect on the root chakra. Sitting on grass or under a tree helps in absorbing the earthly energies and is an ideal spot for this activity. Take this idea of mindfully moving on your walk with you. Concentrate on your foot leaving the ground and connecting to the earth again with each step. You’ll give your mind a break and cleanse your root chakra at the same time. For bonus points, walk barefoot to really ground your energy.

Sound Therapy

The ‘C’ note causes harmonious vibrations in the root chakra, as well as the chanting of the LAM sound, which has a positive effect on it. You can watch the video below to learn how to practice chakra healing through sound:

Dance

I don’t care if you “can’t dance.” Close the door and move your body. This is one of the best ways to balance this chakra. Even better—turn on music and sing along, as singing cleanses your throat chakra for an added bonus.

Get on your yoga mat

Yoga Asanas that help to open and align Muladhara. This is my favorite yogi, she will show you yoga to balance your Root Chakra.

Foot massage

The physical core of the body according to the root chakra is the spinal column and the sacro-coccygeal nerve plexus. The root chakra is connected to the energy from the earth by the legs and the feet. To stimulate the energy flow in the root chakra region, the legs, feet and gluteal muscles should be massaged.

Organize your Life

Organize your work life or your home life. Create a filing system if you need to, put up some extra shelves, clean out a junk drawer. Anything to give you some structure.

Move your body

Physical exercise supports root chakra healing – especial movement that focuses on your lower body.

Mental Strategies

Identify an area of your life where you lack self-confidence and come up with a few simple steps you can take to overcome that lack. Journal about the limiting beliefs you have about yourself as well as where those beliefs come from and how you can begin to change them. Journal about other first chakra concerns. Use the following prompts to help: Do you feel supported? Are your roots strong enough to support you wherever you are? How resourceful are you? Do you find yourself in situations that others want for you but don’t feel good to you? Pay attention to your ‘glass half-empty’ moments and work to change them to ‘glass half-full’ moments. Remember that abundance thinking attracts abundance to you – this includes abundant belonging.

A strong root chakra is the foundation for health and the stability of your other chakras. By practicing these healing exercises you’ll gain a sense that you truly belong in the universe. Your energy and confidence will increase. Fear will no longer be a motivating factor in your life and you’ll live with the knowing that everything will turn out okay and according to plan.

Stay tuned and check out our next post about Sacral Chakra.

OUR JOURNEY ABOUT CHAKRAS HAVE STARTED

Let’s start with a brief definition. What is a chakra? A chakra is a center of energy. Originating from Sanskrit, it literally means “wheel” by association with its function as a vortex of spinning energy interacting with various physiological and neurological systems in the body. Chakras are energy centers within the human body that help to regulate all its processes, from organ function to to the immune system and emotions. We can commonly count 7 chakras positioned throughout your body, from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Each chakra has its own vibrational frequency, that is depicted through a specific chakra color, and governs specific functions that help make you, well, human.

Chakras connect your spiritual bodies to your physical one.

They regulate the flow of energy throughout the electrical network (meridians) that runs through the physical body. The body’s electrical system resembles the wiring in a house. It allows electrical current to be sent to every part, and it is ready for use when needed.

Sometimes chakras become blocked because of stress, emotional or physical problems. If the body’s ‘energy system’ can not flow freely it is likely that problems will occur. The consequence of irregular energy flow may result in physical illness and discomfort or a sense of being mentally and emotionally out of balance.

Chakra 7 – The Crown

Its colour is violet and it is located at the top of your head. It is associated with the cerebral cortex, central nervous system and the pituitary gland. It is concerned with information, understanding, acceptance and bliss. It is said to be your own place of connection to God, the Chakra of Divine purpose and personal destiny. Blockage can manifest as psychological problems.

Chakra 6 – The Third Eye (or Brow Chakra)

Its colour is Indigo (a combination of red and blue). It is located at the centre of your forehead at eye level or slightly above. This Chakra is used to question the spiritual nature of our life. It is the Chakra of question, perception and knowing. It is concerned with inner vision, intuition and wisdom. Your dreams for this life and recollections of other lifetimes are held in this Chakra. Blockage may manifest as problems like lack of foresight, mental rigidity, ‘selective’ memory and depression.

Chakra 5. The Throat

Its colour is blue or turquoise and it is located within the throat. It is the Chakra of communication, creativity, self-expression and judgement. It is associated with your Neck, shoulders, arms, hands, thyroid and parathyroid glands. It is concerned with the senses of inner and outer hearing, the synthesising of ideas, healing, transformation and purification. Blockage can show up as creative blocks, dishonesty or general problems in communicating ones needs to others.

Chakra 4 – The Heart

Its colour is green and it is located within your heart. It is the centre of love, compassion, harmony and peace. The Asians say that this is the house of the soul. This Chakra is Associate with your lungs, heart, arms hands and thymus gland. We fall in love through our heart Chakra, then that feeling of unconditional love moves to the emotional centre commonly known as the solar plexus. After that it moves into the sexual centre or Base Chakra where strong feelings of attraction can be released. When these energies move into the Base Chakra we may have the desire to marry and settle down. Blockage can show itself as immune system, lung and heart problems, or manifest as inhumanity, lack of compassion or unprincipled behaviour.

Chakra 3 – The Solar Plexus

Its colour is yellow and it is located a few inches above the navel in the solar plexus area. This chakra is concerned with your digestive system, muscles, pancreas and adrenals. It is the seat of your emotional life. Feelings of personal power, laughter, joy and anger are associated with this centre. Your sensitivity, ambition and ability to achieve are stored here. Blockage may manifest as anger, frustration, lack of direction or a sense of victimisation.

Chakra 2 – The Sacral (or Navel Chakra)

Its colour is orange and it is located between the base of your spine and your navel. It is associated with your lower abdomen, kidneys, bladder, circulatory system and your reproductive organs and glands. It is concerned with emotion. This chakra represents desire, pleasure, sexuality, procreation and creativity. Blockage may manifest as emotional problems, compulsive or obsessive behaviour and sexual guilt.

1. the Base (or Root Chakra)

Its colour is red and it is located at the perineum, base of your spine. It is the Chakra closest to the earth. Its function is concerned with earthly grounding and physical survival. This Chakra is associated with your legs, feet, bones, large intestine and adrenal glands. It controls your fight or flight response. Blockage may manifest as paranoia, fear, procrastination and defensiveness.

If you want to learn even more about chakras, and how to open each to harness your spiritual energy to feel truly alive, stay tuned , we will share everything in our next post.

THE ART OF LIVING BEAUTIFULLY: BEAUTY RITUALS

At Vian Holistic, we believe in the power of the beauty ritual to renew, relax, and transform. Setting aside just a few minutes a day for yourself can do wonders for emotional well-being, happiness and confidence.

For some people, beauty routines are a necessary supplement to other forms of mental and emotional health care like therapy and medication. Something as simple as a three-minute skin-care routine twice a day is a helpful start.

It is what you do each and every day that greatly affects your desired outcome. People often ask us about miracle treatment to make you feel better, also ingredients and quick fixes for skin care. It is our job to keep up with the latest ingredients, developments in techniques and we passionately investigate every lead to make sure that Vian’s services and products are second to none.

But here’s the thing: there is no magic ingredient and service or quick fix. The most powerful element of skin care and specially your well-being is the ritual itself.

Dr. Amy Wechsler, a New York-based dermatologist and psychiatrist (yes, she can prescribe you some dope zit cream and an antidepressant in one visit), who says physical health and mental health are intrinsically linked. “Depression, a lack of sleep, and a decline in grooming often go hand in hand,” she says. “Depressed people often find it hard to take care of their hair, skin, and clothing, at a time when a routine is so important.” For some people suffering from depression, however, the total opposite approach might take hold, and they cope by investing more time and money in “self-care.”

We were inspired by some wonder women that share their holistic beauty rituals for your body, mind and soul. I hope it inspires you too.

London-based beauty blogger Alice Thomas (@alxcext) used to feel alienated by the online beauty community, because of both her brownness and depression. “My beauty routine means a lot to me,” Thomas tells me. “In the morning, doing my makeup makes it feel like a fresh day and a new beginning which is marked by a different beauty look or idea that I’ve had in mind. It’s taught me that my mind can be calmed simply by putting myself together and taking the first step to push myself out the door—especially on those days where even catching a train on time can seem impossible.”

Model, editor, and the “big sister of Brown Twitter,” Simran Randhawa (@simisear_), is outspoken on social media about the repercussions of depression and anxiety on her modeling career and vice versa. Randhawa takes care of herself by either opting for no makeup or doing a full face, depending on what she can handle that day. Some of the best things in life are free—even small acts of self-love that might not seem like a big deal to others. Be it taking a bath or grooming your eyebrows, simply taking the time to acknowledge your body is a powerful act when depression weighs down your every move.

New York-based poet Olivia Gatwood (@oligat) “I don’t know if this is considered a beauty ritual, but I find showering to be extremely helpful,” Gatwood says. “I read somewhere that the full body warmth and water pressure of a shower can actually comfort loneliness because in some way it mimics the feeling of being held. So I like to take long, hot showers and just let myself be with my body.”

Hope you enjoy it. Share with us your ritual beauty.

Make time for these rituals as an act of self-love.

SPRING CLEAN TO LET GO AND GROW

When I was a little girl, I loved to sing the song “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair” from the movie South Pacific while I played in a bathtub full of suds. It’s such an important part of who I am and how I cope with life’s ups and downs.

I particularly love to slow down and reassess my beauty ritual in the Spring. As new possibility blooms all around me, it’s a priority for me to take time and think about what is and what is not working in my life. Am I operating in stagnant patterns? Have I avoided facing my fears to accept a new challenge? Do my daily routines continue to work for me? It is a great time to shed your old skin (literally) so that growth can happen. My favorite spring ritual revolves around cleansing, exfoliation and nourishment and I can’t wait to share it with you next week. Stay tuned!

Love & Blessings,

Sue

Reiki Healing Energy

Reiki Energy! What is it? What is it? How does it heal?

by William Lee Rand

The word Reiki is composed of two Japanese words - Rei and Ki. When translating Japanese into English we must keep in mind that an exact translation is difficult. The Japanese language has many levels of meaning. Therefore the context the word is being used in must be kept in mind when attempting to communicate its essence.

Because these words are used in a spiritual healing context, a Japanese/English dictionary does not provide the depth of meaning we seek, as its definitions are based on common everyday Japanese. As an example, Rei is often defined as ghost and Ki as vapor and while these words vaguely point in the direction of meaning we seek, they fall far short of the understanding that is needed.

When seeking a definition from a more spiritual context, we find that Rei can be defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. Rei is a subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and inanimate. This subtle wisdom guides the evolution of all creation ranging from the unfolding of galaxies to the development of life. On a human level, it is available to help us in times of need and to act as a source of guidance in our lives. Because of its infinite nature, it is all knowing. Rei is also called God and has many other names depending on the culture that has named it.

Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is flowing in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans. When a person's Ki is high, they will feel strong, confident, and ready to enjoy life and take on it's challenges. When it is low, they will feel weak and are more likely to get sick. We receive Ki from the air we breath, from food, sunshine, and from sleep. It is also possible to increase our Ki by using breathing exercises and meditation. When a person dies, their Ki leaves the physical body. Ki is also the Chi of China, the prana of India, the Ti or Ki of the Hawaiians, and has also been called odic force, orgone, bioplasma and life force.

With the above information in mind, Reiki can be defined as a non-physical healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence, or spiritually guided life force energy. This is a functional definition as it closely parallels the experience of those who practice Reiki in that Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own flowing where it is needed in the client and creating the healing conditions necessary for the individuals needs. It cannot be guided by the mind, therefore it is not limited by the experience or ability of the practitioner. Nether can it be misused as it always creates a healing effect. ( It must be kept in mind that Reiki is not the same as simple life force energy as life force energy by itself can be influenced by the mind and because of this, can create benefit as well as cause problems including ill health.)

The source or cause of health comes from the Ki that flows through and around the individual rather than from the functional condition of the physical organs and tissues. It is Ki that animates the physical organs and tissues as it flows through them and therefore is responsible for creating a healthy condition. If the flow of Ki is disrupted, the physical organs and tissues will be adversely affected. Therefore, it is a disruption in the flow of Ki that is the main cause of illness.

An important attribute of Ki is that it responds to ones thoughts and feelings. Ki will flow more strongly or be weakened in its action depending on the quality of ones thoughts and feelings. It is our negative thoughts and feelings that are the main cause of restriction in the flow of Ki. All negative or dis-harmonious thoughts or feelings will cause a disruption in the flow of Ki. Even Western medicine recognizes the role played by the mind in creating illness and some Western doctors state that as much as 98% of illness is caused directly or indirectly by the mind.

It must be understood that the mind exists not only in the brain, but also through-out the body. The nervous system extends to every organ and tissue in the body and so the mind exists here also. It is also known that the mind even extends outside the body in a subtle energy field 2 to 3 feet thick called the aura. Because of this, it is more appropriate to call our mind a mind/body as the mind and body are so closely linked.

Therefore, our negative thoughts are not just in the brain, but also collect in various locations through-out the body and in the aura. The places where negative thoughts and feelings collect is where Ki is restricted in its flow. The physical organs that exist at these locations are restricted in their functioning. If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated quickly, illness results.

The negative thoughts and feelings that are lodged in the unconscious mind/body are the greatest problem as we are not aware of them and therefore, are we are greatly hampered in changing or eliminating them.

The great value of Reiki is that because it is guided by the Higher Intelligence, it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of Ki. It can work directly in the unconscious parts of the mind/body which contain negative Ki-inhibiting thoughts and feelings and eliminate them. As Reiki flows through a sick or unhealthy area, it breaks up and washes away any negative thoughts or feelings lodged in the unconscious mind/body thus allowing a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume. As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and begin functioning in a balanced healthy way thus replacing illness with health.

This non-invasive, completely benign healing technique is becoming more and more popular. As western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing, Reiki is destined to play an important role as an accepted and valued healing practice.

Hope you had enjoyed it.
